Events & competition operations

One campus. Every format.

A competition format and scheduling framework built node by node from the current governing-body rulebooks - UCI, World Skate, World Climbing / IFSC, FIG, FIFA, FIBA and FIVB - and turned into event-day run sheets, officiating headcounts and a cross-node festival weekend model.

Pre-acquisition - LOI in progressTimes, durations and headcounts on this page are Project Motion planning allocations, not claims that a governing body mandates those exact figures. Federation rules change; any sanctioned event must be checked against the latest technical bulletin and event regulations before publication. Safety, medical, safeguarding, venue engineering and emergency requirements must be signed off by the competent professionals and the sanctioning authority.

Node by node

Competition formats

Table Flow Arena

UCI / national federation

BMX Racing + BMX Freestyle (Park & Flatland)

Competition type

Race elimination + judged runs

Planning window

07:00-20:00

Typical duration

1-2 days racing; separate day or session for Freestyle

ProgressionMotos (3 rounds) → Last Chance round → eighth/quarter/semi-finals → 8-rider final. Freestyle: practice → judged qualification → final.

  • Racing needs the full track configuration, Park needs ramp modules, Flatland needs a bare flat floor - budget a 2-4 hour changeover window between configurations.
  • Reserve Day 0 for track certification, administrative confirmation and untimed training - standard UCI practice and it pre-empts safety disputes on race day.
  • Run category blocks (Elite Men/Women, U23) as parallel heats inside the same slot to keep the day inside a broadcastable ~7-hour window.
  • Floodlit evening sessions are viable at the 1,400 lux minimum - a strong spectator and broadcast anchor.

Fynbos Flow Circuit

UCI / Velosolutions

Pump Track

Competition type

Timed qualification + head-to-head knockout

Planning window

08:00-19:00

Typical duration

1 day; a 4-6 hour footprint end to end

ProgressionOpen timed qualifying session → seeded bracket → head-to-head knockouts (32→16→8→4) → final. Time-trial-only permitted where head-to-head is impractical.

  • The cleanest node to run as a stand-alone half-day event or as a support act alongside a BMX racing weekend.
  • The format scales down to age-grade categories, so youth-academy heats can slot in ahead of the elite bracket without disrupting the master schedule.
  • All-weather high-grip asphalt keeps racing continuity in the wet; no lighting minimum is specified the way BMX racing requires.
  • Qualifier-to-final pathway is directly reusable: host a stop on the global series first, then bid for the Final.

Coastal Flow Oasis

World Skate / Olympic format

Skateboarding - Street & Park

Competition type

Judged runs and tricks

Planning window

08:00-20:00

Typical duration

1 day per discipline (prelim and final same day)

ProgressionStreet: 22 skaters per gender, two 45-second runs plus five best-trick attempts (best run + two best tricks, max 300) → top 8 to a score-reset final. Park: three 45-second runs, highest single run counts → top 8 final.

  • Street and Park need different obstacle configurations - schedule them as separate competition days rather than back to back on one footprint.
  • Course reveal and walkthrough must be a fixed pre-competition window in the run sheet, not an ad-hoc one; athletes see the final layout only shortly before the round.
  • Tie-breaks resolve on highest single run score, then highest single trick score - the scoring workstation must hold per-attempt detail, not just totals.
  • Public sessions and sponsor activations fill the venue after the podium without extra officiating overhead.

Fynbos Ascent Hub

World Climbing / IFSC

Competitive Climbing - Boulder, Lead & Speed

Competition type

Problem and route scoring + timed elimination

Planning window

07:00-19:00

Typical duration

1-2 days; Speed is a single day

ProgressionBoulder and Lead: qualification → semi-final → final (~26 to semis, 8 to final). Speed: standardised 15 m wall, bracketed knockout on four lanes.

  • Route-setting for Boulder and Lead needs a dedicated closed-door window before each round - block it in the venue calendar, do not treat it as buffer.
  • Speed's sub-6-second climbs make it the ideal fast-turnaround filler alongside slower judged finals, or a stand-alone community exhibition.
  • Given the compact 1,436 m² footprint, run Boulder and Lead qualification on separate days so certified route-setters get full resets.
  • Lead fields above 80 climbers split qualification into two sessions feeding one combined semi-final.

Aerial Motion Park

FIG / national federation

Trampoline & Aerial - Individual & Synchronised

Competition type

Judged routines

Planning window

07:00-19:00

Typical duration

1-2 days; achievable in one day for a moderate field

ProgressionQualification: compulsory routine (10 skills) + voluntary routine (10 skills) with Time of Flight → top 8 (max 2 per country) to a single-routine final, scores reset, lowest qualifier first.

  • Time of Flight and Horizontal Displacement scoring need calibrated laser equipment - schedule an equipment-check block, not just a warm-up block.
  • Judging between competitors takes longer than the routine itself - plan realistic gaps for a five-judge panel rather than back-to-back routines.
  • Synchronised trampoline is a World Championship rather than Olympic discipline, so it can be programmed as a campus headline without Olympic-cycle scheduling pressure.
  • Larger fields split qualification across morning and afternoon with the final in the evening broadcast slot.

Field Hall

FIFA / FIBA / FIVB

Futsal, Basketball (5x5 & 3x3) and Volleyball (indoor & beach)

Competition type

Match play - pools and brackets

Planning window

08:00-21:00

Typical duration

1 day per code; multi-day festival for pool-and-bracket formats

ProgressionFutsal: two 20-minute periods of actual playing time, max 15-minute half-time, one 60-second time-out per half; knockouts go to 2 × 5-minute extra time then penalties. Basketball 5x5: four 10-minute quarters, 24-second shot clock. 3x3: single 10-minute running clock, first to 21. Volleyball: pool play into brackets.

  • Realistic venue slots including warm-up and changeover: futsal 70-80 minutes, basketball 5x5 90-100 minutes, 3x3 15-20 minutes, indoor volleyball 90-120 minutes, beach volleyball 45-60 minutes.
  • Futsal and 5x5 basketball cannot share one scheduled day without a full court changeover (different rigging and line markings) - alternate single-code competition days unless the floor carries convertible markings.
  • 3x3 basketball and beach volleyball are the standout formats for filling the calendar with community and youth-academy tournament days between elite fixtures.
  • A markable, sub-dividable floor plan lets 3x3 and volleyball run two to three parallel courts on festival days.

Stoke Oasis Lagoon is deliberately excluded from this pass. Wave-pool surf competition runs a continuous session and heat model - operationally closer to a swim-meet lane schedule than to the elimination ladders above - and the ISA / WSL format differs enough to deserve its own dedicated brief. The master-schedule workbook already carries a planning template for it (06:30-18:30, 1-3 days, heats into quarter, semi and final).

Proposed addition

Volleyball - indoor and beach - in the Field Hall.

Two Olympic-programme disciplines added to a single convertible node: a marked indoor floor with net sleeves for the 6 v 6 game, and graded sand courts for the 2 v 2 beach format. It elevates Project Motion from an action-sport campus to a genuinely multi-code Olympic-capable venue - and widens the community and school pipeline substantially.

Indoor volleyball (6 v 6)

FIVB / Volleyball South Africa

Best of five sets - first four to 25 points, deciding fifth to 15, each with a two-point winning margin. Rally scoring, so every rally scores regardless of serve.

Venue slot: 90-120 minutes per match including warm-up and changeover

Set-up: 18 × 9 m court with a free zone, net at 2.43 m (men) / 2.24 m (women) on retractable posts dropped into floor sleeves, referee stand and libero tracking table.

Olympic programme discipline since 1964 - the highest-participation indoor code available to the Field Hall.

Beach volleyball (2 v 2)

FIVB / Volleyball South Africa

Best of three sets - first two to 21 points, deciding third to 15, two-point margin, rally scoring. Teams switch ends every 7 points (5 in the decider).

Venue slot: 45-60 minutes per match; a full pool day turns over rapidly

Set-up: 16 × 8 m sand court, minimum 40 cm graded sand depth, same net heights as indoor, no substitutions and no coaching during play.

Olympic programme discipline since 1996 and a natural fit for a West Coast campus 900 m from the Atlantic.

Snow / hybrid variants and school formats

FIVB development formats

Reduced-court 4 v 4 and 3 v 3 school and academy formats using the same rally scoring on shortened sets to 15 or 21.

Venue slot: 20-35 minutes per match - festival and league programming

Set-up: Sub-divided hall floor or two sand courts running in parallel.

The volume layer: school leagues, corporate nights and academy festivals between sanctioned fixtures.

  • Two additional Olympic-programme disciplines - indoor and beach - added to a campus that already targets Olympic and World Cup standards in skate, climbing, BMX and trampoline.
  • Convertible use of one node: the Field Hall floor carries volleyball markings and net sleeves alongside futsal and basketball, and indoor graded sand courts inside the same envelope serve the beach format.
  • Volleyball is among the highest-participation team sports in South African schools, which widens the community and academy pipeline well beyond action-sport specialists.
  • Beach volleyball is broadcast-friendly, low-cost to programme and runs in tightly programmed indoor sand blocks that pair naturally with the enclosed surf lagoon and skate content days.
  • Federation-sanctioned volleyball hosting rights, if sought and granted, would strengthen the multi-code case for national and continental championship bids - and with them the case for public co-funding.
Pre-acquisition - LOI in progressVolleyball is a proposed addition to the Field Hall node. Court conversion, sand-court siting and the associated capital allowance are illustrative, pre-rezoning and not included in the locked financial model v1.0.

Scheduling doctrine

How the campus calendar is built

Weekend-anchored formats

Nearly every discipline reviewed is built around a Fri/Sat or Sat/Sun elite window with an arrival and training day beforehand. Align cross-node festival weekends to that rhythm rather than fighting it.

Qualify, then reset for finals

BMX, skate, climbing (Boulder and Lead) and trampoline all narrow the field in qualification and reset scores to zero for the final. That is the dominant broadcast structure in action sport and the default template for Project Motion original competitions.

Judged and timed codes carry different overheads

Skate, BMX Freestyle, Lead and Boulder climbing and trampoline all need multi-person panels with scoring buffer between athletes. BMX racing, pump track, speed climbing and 3x3 basketball turn over far faster - sequence a broadcast day so a fast code fills around the slower judged finals.

Reveal and route-setting windows are compliance, not buffer

Course reveal in skate and BMX Freestyle Park, and closed route-setting in climbing, must be locked into the run sheet with the same rigour as competition itself.

Stagger finals across nodes

With two on-site broadcast studios, node finals should be staggered rather than run in parallel so one production and commentary crew can cover consecutive finals across the campus during a single festival weekend.

Protect training and maintenance blocks

Daily protected academy blocks and planned low-demand maintenance windows sit inside the annual calendar, so competition programming never consumes the community and reset capacity the venues depend on.
